i mean, these were kids who were probably toddlers when it came out. and they were definitely pretty up there when i read the articles if they're even still alive now. but if i remember correctly, marvel was owned by two different companies at the time and while the half that was owned by disney was targeted for younger and older audiences alike, the other company aimed for adults. so yeah, there was a bit of a disconnect there.
it's actually amazing that two companies were able to both hold copyright over a single brand like that.
